BUILT MANIFESTO 1.        Make life more enjoyable 2.        Simplicity in design liberates the imagination 3.        Not for everybody, but for every-other-body 4.        Materials and processes are our inspiration 5.        Color! We need color to compete with the Texan sun, the Oregon Drizzle and the gray New York snow. The color of roasted beet and moss. The sheen of buffed zinc. The look of knurled metal, molded pulp, woven polypropylene, raku glaze (copper-glazed red hot ceramic pots dropped in sawdust: whoomph!) 6.        The way things are made is part of their beauty – If a product can be made with two parts, don’t make it with twelve. 7.        Perscriptive design shackles the mind. 8.        Make it strong, make it simple, pack it flat, price it low. 9.        The future lies on the factory floor. 10. The pop of a cork being pulled, the click of a ratchet, the fing of a Big Ben alarm clock, the laugh of a two year-old, scissors cutting paper, the snap and crack of a Polaroid SX-70 camera, the crunch of frozen grass underfoot, the hum of a power transformer. The smell of three-in-one oil, of babies, of cedar, wet concrete, and coffee. The feel of memory foam, tanned leather, Bakelite and polished marble. The resilience of cork. The taste of saffron, warm ripe cantaloupe, and dark chocolate. These things inspire fierce, inventive originality.
